What StoneStory is

StoneStory is an AI-assisted genealogy tool that reads Jewish tombstone photographs and extracts genealogical information from them. It is intended for personal family history research.

AI outputs are not guaranteed to be correct

The text extraction, date conversion, place identification, and name transliteration are performed by a large language model. The model makes mistakes — it can misread letters, fail to identify a town, or produce an incorrect date conversion.

Every field is accompanied by a confidence rating, but even high-confidence outputs should be verified against original sources before being used in serious genealogical research or shared with others. We rate our confidence honestly, but we are not infallible.

Do not rely on StoneStory as a sole source for any genealogical conclusion.

Photos you upload

By uploading a photo, you confirm that you have the right to do so. For tombstone photos taken in a public cemetery, this is generally unambiguous. Do not upload photos that contain living people’s personal information without their consent.

You retain ownership of your photos. We process them to provide the service and do not use them for any other purpose.

What StoneStory is not

• Not a certified genealogical service or archive
• Not a replacement for professional genealogical research
• Not a substitute for verifying records at their original source

Acceptable use

Use StoneStory for personal or academic genealogical research. Do not use it to process photographs at commercial scale, scrape data, or resell outputs without written permission.

Service availability

We may change, limit, or discontinue the service at any time. We are a small team and cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability. We will try to give reasonable notice for significant changes.

Disclaimer of warranties

StoneStory is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, or non-infringement. We make no representations or guarantees regarding the correctness, reliability, or usefulness of any output produced by the service.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, StoneStory and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages of any kind arising out of or related to your use of — or inability to use — this service. This includes, without limitation: errors or inaccuracies in transcription, translation, or date conversion; incorrect identification of names, places, or persons; genealogical conclusions drawn from AI-generated outputs; decisions, actions, or communications made on the basis of information provided by this service; or any loss of data, time, money, or opportunity.

You use this service entirely at your own risk. Verify all findings independently before acting on them.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless StoneStory and its operators from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from your use of the service, your violation of these terms, or your reliance on any output produced by the service.
